DO SOMETHING which carries the slightest — even the very slightest — hint of criticism about something connected with education, and you run the risk of being denounced as somebody who probably also hates motherhood, the flag and apple * •* pie.
Because of the extreme sensitivity of anything related to education, it took some measure of political courage for Rappahannock’s Board of Supervisors to raise complaints about the so-called “quality education” standards which are being propounded by the Virginia Board of Education.
But the Supervisors’ point is well-taken, especially the complaint they registered through a formal resolution over a formula for paying for this “quality education” which — Chairman Newbill Miller thinks — could create an increase of 30 ?per cent in the county real estate tax rate.
ON THE FACE OF it, the situation is ridiculous, From what we have observed — and we’re not alone — Rappahannock County has done pretty well by its youngsters in the way of educational opportunities. The remote educational bureaucrats who now tell the county that it has been derelict in its educational responsibilities are not only arrogant and high-handed, they’re also wrong.
