ANYONE WHO MIGHT still be wondering why newspapers—especially this one—carry on so much about closed-door meetings need only consider the example of Prince William County.
The so-called “reform supervisors” in that hapless jurisdiction have throughout their term demonstrated a distressing proclivity for conducting all public affairs in private, and now they’ve managed to top themselves.
Only one short week ago, the Supervisors announced to a surprised and at least partly distressed public (if not everyone was distressed, perhaps it was because they were stunned, and incapable of any kind of reaction), that the Marriott Corporation had accepted an “invitation” from the Supervisors to establish in Prince William their hokey, “Great America Theme Park” which had been booted out of Howard County, Md., after environmental and economic impact studies had revealed that it would have been a disaster.
