IN SPITE of complaints ,in some areas that turkey hunting wasn’t as good as 1971, and the fact that we had a wet spring, Virginia hunters bagged over 4,000 turkeys this past season. This was up from 3,663 the season before. These figures are for the fall season only.
The bear harvest of 145 this past season was the lowest since 1966. During the years of 1967 through 1971 Virginia hunters were averaging about 325 bruins annually.
The bear kill seems to fluctuate up and down with the amount of mast. Years of little mast have resulted in a low bear kill. Possibly because of the lack of mast bears restrict their movement and tend to hole up and are thus less available to hunters.
ANOTHER state record for Virginia hunters was the 433 pheasants taken in 1972. Of these birds 171 were from Page County, 76 from Loudoun and 61 from Shenandoah.
