POLLUTION is a subject you hear a lot about these days, and Rappahannock County is no exception—as readers of the letters to the Editor have found out over the past several weeks. Few things can stir up people more„ than a bad smell— figuratively or literally—and the noxious perfumes wafting over the mountain from Front Royal have certainly been no exception.
If anyone has been waiting for the News to thunder editorially on this subject, then we’d advise them not to hold their breath (unless it was for defensive purposes, when the winds start blowing from the north). We have absolutely no technical data on the subject of bad smells. To paraphrase the artlover who asserted that he didn’t know anything about art but he knew what he liked, we know a stink that we don’t like.
One letter-writer challenged the newspaper to send a reporter up to Front Royal and get the facts, so to speak, from the dragon’s mouth. The same thought had occured to us, and we talked to a reporter about it. He refused; said he’d like to, but that he has a sensitive stomach.
ABOUT THE ONLY constructive thought that did occur to us (we had several de-structive thoughts), related to a discussion at the March meeting of the Rappahannock Board of Supervisors.
Citizens and Supervisors alike agreed that one reason the Huntly trash dumpster site is such a mess is because individuals—and businesses—from Front Royal drive down and avail themselves of the facility provided by Rappahannock.
Now, fair’s fair. If we can’t do anything about the stink, and if Front Royalists think a big payroll is worth the nausea it generates, then the least we could expect in Rappahannock is that Front Royal keep its garbage to itself. □
