boilers from domestically produced bituminous coal to low-sulfur fuel oil, which will remove from the area the major source of SO-2 emmissions. The ground level SO-2 concentration was not reported in Mr. Campbell’s testimony. However, FMC- Front Royal is taking the above steps to meet the 1975 national SO-2 ambient-air:quality standard.
FMC-Front Royal produces over 285,000,000 pounds of synthetic (manmade) fibers each year which contribute to the comfort and well being of many millions of our fellow Americans. Removing the plant from Front Royal would remove not only the odor but a $20,000,000 payroll. It would be about the same as throwing -the baby out with the bath water or cutting off your head to cure a headache. There is no doubt the cure would be effective but the people concerned might not like the Cost. It is primarily a question of priorities — whether, directly or indirectly you are supported by the plant, enjoy the benefits of the plant, or receive no benefits from the plant and object to the occasional odor.
