Trout stocking
Over one-half million trout will be stocked in Virginia’s 600 miles of trout streams in preparation for the opening day of trout season, April 7, according to Game Commission Fish Division Chief Jack Hoffman. However, Rappahannock County received less than usual for only Piney Branch near Sperryville was stocked this year. This stream received rainbow and brown trout two weeks ago. • Some of the stocked fish come from state sources and others from National Forest Stamp funds collected in Virginia’s two National Forests. About80% 0 5 of the fish are rainbow trout. Some of the streams in Rappahannock were lost due to posting by landowners. Where objections were voiced the Game Commission complied with the wishes of the landowners. . Other waters in the area which were stocked include Ivy Branch, South River and Swift Run in Greene County; Garth Run, Hughes River Robinson River and Rose River in Madison County. The East Fork of Hawksbill Creek, Cub Run, Hawksbill Creek, Pitt Spring Run and Upper Passage Creek in Page County received fish and Gooney Run in Warren County. In Shenandoah County Passage Creek, lower and Bayse Big Stoney Creek, Cedar Creek, Mill Creek, Little Stoney, above and below Woodstock reservoir, Paddy Run, Mountain Run, Peters Mill Creek, Upper Passage Creek and Tomahawk Pond were all stocked. u
