After carefully reading the several letters to the Editor of this newspaper over the past few weeks concerning the FMC-Front Royal plant, we are led to the conclusion that these letters are based more on uninformed emotionalism than carefully considered odorants, health, technical, economic facts.
From the general tone of the letters, it seems that the authors are concerned more about the odorants emitted from the plant than they are about other factors of plant operation. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and individual reaction to odorants is in the nose of the smeller. The human nose is extremely sensitive odor dector and can detect sulfur compounds down to about one part per billion (one thousand million). In most cases this is considerably below the detection limit of the most sensitive analytical instruments that are now available. Sulfur compounds emitted by the plant consist chiefly of carbon disulfide (CS-2), sulfur gen sulfide (H-2S), and prodioxide (SO-2), and hydrobably other complex sulfur compounds that have not yet been identified.
