A Clear Voice
The late Judge J. R. H. Alexander, who for many years presided over the Rappahannock County Circuit Court, used to tell about the wild quality of Rappahannock and of the independence of her people.
This quality in the County and the people of Rappahannock came out last week during the day-long hearings on the proposed Vepco power line that would cut a swath through some of the most scenic areas of Rappahannock.
Newbill Miller, chairman of the County Board of Supervisors, in a sense spoke for Rappahannock’s people when he testified in opposition to the Vepco line. “You can be assured,w he told two members of the State Corporation Commission, “that our Board, in voting unanimously in opposition to the power line, is representative of our people.’’
Beauty, wildness and freedom are things much to be nurtured in this age of “progress.’’ And it is worth the effort of all Rappahannock people to preserve this wild and beautiful quality which impresses even those who are but casual visitors.
Rappahannock has spoken with a clear voice, and it is hoped that the Commission, in its final hearings later this month, will listen. □
