A recent Public Law authorized the Veterans Administration to pay aid and attendance to eligible parents who are receiving dependency and indemnity compensation or death compensation. This aid and attendance allowance is $55.00 per month for each parent and paid in addition to regular monthly amounts of DIC or death compensation a parent might be receiving. A parent, otherwise eligible, may receive the $55.00 per month if a patient in a nursing home, or so helpless as to require the aid and attendance of another person.
If the proper evidence is submitted, the VA is permitted to authorize payments retroactive for up to one year, back to the effective date of the law.
If a parent is a patient in a nursing home, then a statement to that effect will be sufficient for VA to award aid and attendance benefits. If a parent is not in a nursing home, then it will be necessary to submit medical evidence.
If a parent is also whittled to receive pension based upon his or her military service, aid and attendance allowance is payable as a veteran and as a parent.
