A SUBSTANTIAL reduction of 28 March deaths, when compared to those of last March, was instrumental in holding Virginia’s 1973 deaths for the first three months of the year to 247, or 26 less than the 273 for the same period of 1972, Col. H. W. Burgess, superintendent of State Police, reported.
Pedestrian deaths were down from 48 to 38^ deaths of servicemen from 12 to four and those of motorcyclists were even at five, he said.
Traffic volumes for January 1973, were 9.5 per cent above those of January 1972, and Col. Burgess said the upward trend will probably be about the same for January and February when information is available.
Deaths in 1973 numbered 73 in January, 88 in February and 86 in March. For 1972, the comparative tolls were 85, 74 and 114.
