AN “OUTSIDE consultant” will be hired to prepare the upcoming Rappahannock County budget, it was decided at the March 7 meeting of the Board of Supervisors. Clerk E. M. Jones, who has prepared the budgets in the past, “decLned to do it” this year, reported Chairman Newbill Miller.
“It is not that the Board is disatisfied with the job done by Mr. Jones,” Miller explained to his fellow Supervisors. “But it’s because he’s declined to do it.”
“It’s because I was told that my services weren’t wanted,” said Jones.
Commonwealth’s Attorney George Davis was quick to say that “since some doubt has been left as to who told him, I want the record to show that I didn’t tell him.”
“I didn’t, either,” said Chairman Miller.
JONES steadfastly refused to elaborate, either at the meeting or afterward.
“I was told I wasn’t wanted,” the Clerk of the Court said, “and who ever told me knows who he is.” The only elaboration he would make on this statement was to explain that it did not involve any question of conflict of interest, nor did it involve any instructions from Circuit Court officials. “He knows who he is,” he repeated.
