Mr. Gardiner attended Gillman School and Landon School in Bethesda, Md. and was a graduate of Duke University.
Besides his father, he is survived by a sister, Miss Eleanor Stuart Gardiner of Cambridge, Mass.; a brother, Peter L. Gardiner of Evian Les Bianes, France; and two uncles who reside in Baltimore.
