RAPPAHANNOCK’S Supervisors, at their meeting last Thursday, appropriated funds to hire an assistant for county registrar Mary Cleverley.
County electoral board chairman James F. Massie told the Supervisors that the state electoral board now requires all county registrars to have an assistant. Although the state reimburses the county for the registrar’s salary, the county must pay the assistant’s salary.
Massie noted that neither the Supervisors nor the electoral board is responsible for appointing the assistant. “We have nothing to do with Mrs. Cleverley’s office,” he said. “All we do is to appoint her. Then she picks her deputy.” Massie added that Mrs. Cleverley has named Elizabeth Scherschell as her assistant.
