BOWHUNTERS will find this year’s October 12, 1974 opening of bow season a little earlier than in past years, cautions the Virginia Game Commission. The November 9 closing this year may also sneak up on archers used to the traditional November 15 final date.
The rollback was to avoid overlap with the Small Game Season and, on some years, with the first day of Big Game Season. The current second Saturday in October through second Saturday in November will prevent such overlapping dates.
The muzzle-loading season, which was coincident with the last week of bow season, was likewise bumped back to November 4-9. Though actual dates will vary widely hunters will generally experience more warm days with leaf fall coming late in the season.
