RAPPAHANNOCK’S voters were in step with a nationwide Democratic landslide trend when they went to the polls Tuesday—but they didn’t vote for a winner in their own Congressional District.
While Rappahannock—and some neighboring jurisdictions—were giving Democratic challenger George Gilliam a majority of their votes, the Republican incumbent, J. Kenneth Robinson, was winning in the District as a whole.
In Rappahannock, Gilliam received 723 votes to 532 for Robinson. In the District as a whole, Robinson won by a 52,948 to 48,646 margin. Robinson won by big margins in his native Winchester, and in Shenandoah Valley counties which are included in the District, while Gilliam failed to carry either his native Charlottesville or Albemarle County.
