reason and a gracious acceptance of conclusions—then, of course, everyone is in favor of “collective bargaining.” But to be in favor of unionization of public employes is something else again. Who would be next? The police, perhaps; there have been some moves in that direction, even among the state’s Troopers. Highway Department bureaucrats? Health Department employes? Everybody?
* AND AS for automatic costof-living pay raises, there are a lot of taxpayers who would also like to have that luxury built into their incomes. But they, unfortunately, are not being paid from the public coffers. As one of the two clearthinking candidates in Fauquier put it (out of eleven), for the Supervisors to grant automatic cost-of-living pay raises would be for them to relinquish their fiscal responsibility to all, emphasize all, members of the public.
The pressures for such things are not as great in Rappahannock as they are in Fauquier and more “developed” counties to the east and north of us, but they’ve been felt. In the best interests of all of us, let’s hope the Supervisors here show a little more common sense than their neighboring counterparts. □
