Forage field day

PERSONS INTERESTED in livestock and forage production are invited to attend a field day at the Northern Virginia Forage Research Station at Middleburg at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday, October 28. Harlan E. White, Extension specialist in forages at Virginia Tech, which operates the station, said the field day “will be an excellent opportunity to see various types of winter grazing and forage feeding systems which will carry the station’s 11 small herds of beef cows through the coming winter.”

White, an associate professor of agronomy, said the main goal of the research at the Northern Virginia station is to develop lowcost, minimum-labor, yet effective forage systems for feeding beef cows during the winter months.

The various systems being compared for wintering cows include stockpiling tall fescue, small round bales left in the field, hay stacks made with buck rake, alfalfa hay, different grazing rates, and winter versus spring calving. Other research to be shown during the field day includes a comparison of Kentucky 31 tall fescue and the new variety of tall fescue called Kenhy, and small-plot research with different management methods for alfalfa and red clover, White said.
