The House Courts ot Justice Committee has defeated the bill I introduced to provide that persons sentenced to the penitentiary in the future for murder, rape, robbery, arson, voluntary manslaughter and kidnapping would not be eligible for parole until onehlalf of the sentence has been served instead of one-fourth of the sentence as under present law. The legislature has passed a bill requiring a mandatory sentence of at least one year for using a deadly weapon in the commission of murder, rape or robbery in addition to the sentence imposed for the particular crime. I am one of the sponsors of this bill.
The argument seems to be whether these bills would deter serious crimes of violence. I have no doubt that if a per son knows he will be given the death penalty or a very long sentence (without parole or suspension) for the commission of the serious crimes of r violence mentioned that this will be a deterrent in a number of cases
