HOW RURAL Rappahannock County obtained a delay in instituting a kindergarten program mandated by the state, with a convincing demonstration of how undue financial strain could be avoided, was reported at the March 4 meeting of the County’s Board of Supervisors.
And if the efforts of Rappahannock’s representatives in die General Assembly are successfull, the county may obtain yet another concession in the so-called “standards of excellence” in education which the state has been enforcing in recent years. Delegate D. French Slaughter has pushed a bill through the House of Delegates to allow an extended pre-school summer school program to be instituted in small, rural counties, instead of a kindergarten program offered during the regular school year.
Reporting on these efforts were Chairman Pete Luke of the Board of Supervisors, Chairman E. N. Montague of the Rappahannock Board of Education, and 0. A. Norton, superintendent of schools. These three were members of a county delegation which went to Richmond Friday, Februray 27, in
