Bicentennial license plate sales in Virginia are expected to exceed 350,000 by the end of this month, according to Vern L. Hill, Commissioner of the Division of Motor Vehicles. This means that about ten per cent of thethree-and a-half million vehicles registered in Virginia have been issued bicentennial tags.
“We are currently selling over 5.000 plates each month,” Hill said. “When the tags were introduced in 1975, we hoped to sell 100.000 of them. Needless to say, we are delighted with public response.”
Designed to commemorate the Independence Bicentennial in Virginia, the reflectorized tags are valid for five years, or until December 31, 1981. They feature a profile of George Washington surrounded by 13 stars and carry a $5 fee in addition to the usual annual registration fees.
