“THE public certainly has the right to use the clerk’s office. It’s a public record room,” Davis continued. “It’s the responsibility of the Board of Supervisors to provide the space to utilize the purpose of the clerk’s office. There’s no room now to take care of filing essential documents.”

“We’re way overdue on this thing,” agreed Supervisor Clarence Baldwin. “Something must be done right away.”

Supervisor Butch Eastham agreed, but had questions about exactly how much space is needed.

Supervisor H. B. Wood also concurred in the necessity of increasing the record storage space, but questioned whether an imperative need exists for conference rooms, instead suggesting that oth - er county offices be used.

“We’ve got to have some figures before we decide,” contended Eastham.

At a bare minimum, an extra vault is required, Davis responded.

WOOD suggested that any decision be postponed until Chairman Pete Luke recovered from his illness and could take part in the deliberations. He agreed that something needed to be done in regard to the clerk’s office but how and when still had to be determined.

Davis asked that a committee be appointed to study the matter and come up with a plan for expansion. He volunteered to serve on such a body. He added that he had made copies of the state law pretaining to the Board’s responsibility to provide space for the conduct of the court’s business for each of the Supervisors.

“We know our responsibilities,” answered Latham.

“We shouldn’t keep on postponing,” warned Baldwin. “The judge has said he’ll take over and do something and he will.. .The people who use these facilities are up in the air and they’re not going to wait too long.”
