Bad weather closed portions of the Shenandoah National Park during January and the snow and cold weather vastly decreased travel in the Park. According to statistics a 30.4% decrease in travel occurred thin January as compared to a year ago. The Simmons Gap subdistrict was closed 27 days due to ice and snow, as well as the section from U. S. 33 to Big Meadows.
A total of 48,100 visitors were in the Park this January while 69,100 visited there in January of 1976.
The maximum temperature at Big Meadows during the month was 39 degrees while the minimum was minus 16 degrees. Precipitation was 1.08 inches and snowfall measured 14.5 inches. □
