The “Award for Broadcast Excellence,” a golden trophy, was presented to the co-producers for the “Breakfast Show” aired on July 4, 1976 from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Pat Gates and Phil Irwin started the VOA day of special Bicentennial coverage with special interviews, music and on the scene descriptions of holiday activity in the historic city.
Irwin, a native of the Hudson Valley region of New York, is a graduate of Syracuse University and, with his wife, Phyllis, and young son, Ross, now makes his home on a small farm in the Blue Ridge Mountain foothills of Rappahannock County. He managed an American Forces Network station in Germany and was management advisor for Radio Mercur in Copenhagen, Denmark.
