As shared secretary to the Sheriff and Commonwealth’s Attorney during the past year, I guess I have been as involved in the issue of improper claims for mileage and inaccurate reports, as much as anyone could possibly be.
Repeated complaints and pointed inquiries were made by citizens throughout the fall in regard to the 15 cent per mile allowed the Sheriff’s Department above their regular salaries.
Mr. Davis, in the performance of his duty as Commonwealth’s Attorney, called the Compensation Board in Richmond for a ruling on the allowable claims for mileage by the Sheriff’s Department.
Mr. Buntin took the position that he should run his department as he saw fit, without direction from anyone and only backed down when the mileage vouchers were held up.
The use of your newspaper to support this untenable position, to cloud and complicate a simple situation and to valify Mr. Davis for fulfilling his elected responsibility, has polarized the community and provided a disservice to Rappahannock.
