USE CAUTION IN HANDLING LARGE HAY BALES—Ever since the advent of the large round hay baler I have heard of a few amusing incidents but no serious accidents. I remember K. P. Grigsby telling me about his first experience with their new round bales. He unwisely dropped a freshly rolled bale on the side of a steep hill. The thousand pound plus bale started rolling. As it gained, momentum, it bounded into the air a couple of times. Smashed through the barbed wire fence at the edge of the field and finally came to rest in the Thornton River.
The agriculture engineers have asked Extension Agents to warn their farmers that tractor operators can and have been killed when improperly handling large round bales. These bales can roll down the lift arms of front-end loaders, if the bucket is raised above the tractor hood. Use care. Good farmers are becoming an endangered species in the Northern Piedmont.
