1962 when it damaged oat*, wheat, and winter barley. The beetle has continued to spread east and last spring the larvae could be found throughout the county feeding on spring seeded oats. Several fanners were forced to spray in an attempt to salvage an already drought ^ damaged spring oat crop.
The U. S. D. A. after careful study and research has introduced biological control measures that will eventually, we hope, control this insect. In the meantime if you plan to plant oats this spring, plan to make frequent field inspections for the cereal leaf beetle larvae. And be prepared to spray.
In Rappahannock late planted com was severely damaged by the fall armyworm. Starting about the first of August the worms shredded the leaves, entered the whorl, cut off the tassels, bored through the com husk and turned the ear into a brown mushy mess.
