population exploded from the deep south north to New Jersey. Entomologist therorize that the extreme cold last winter cut down on the predacious insects which attack the worms. Then came an early warm spring with southerly winds that gave the moths an early start north. Next came the drought, and dry weather retarded the development and spread of viruses, fungi and bacteria that kill the worm. As the females arrived, they laid eggs starting a continuous life cycle - egg • caterpillar • pupae • moth • egg, that was complete from egg to egg in 30 days. This continued until we had a killing freeze.
No one I have talked to can remember an outbreak like this. So it would seem the odds would be in favor of not having this problem this year. No guarantee. No refunds.
