Overall park visits in 1981 are up 9.9 percent: the July increase is 3.3 percent. Overnight stays are also up slightly for July, but down slightly for the year to date.
This increase in July reflects an increase in those chotising to stay overnight in concession lodging: camping and trail overnights have dropped slightly.
Bill Loftis, Assistant Superintendent at the Park, who keeps the statistics for Park visits says that it’s almost impossible to tell what is causing the gradual decline in Thornton Gap entries, but said that the completion of the Interstate could certainly be a factor.
