and twice as good acoustically, he said. “All partitions, unless they are part of the support structure, are movable or removable,” Faulkner said. “You could knock down a block wall and rebuild it cheaper than putting in socalled movable walls.” Fairfax County has the second highest school cost in the country; only Westchester County, N. Y., is higher, Faulkner said. “They can afford to move a partition three or four times and give up on it. This county should use cheaper materials.” Eastham asked Faulkner what should be done about the large classroom with only seven students taking trigonometry. “I’d find an office space if possible,” Faulkner said, “unless the big space wouldn’t be used anyway. Don’t make the move unless the too-big room has a better use.” Board member Nelson Lane said, “The problem is most teachers identify with their own room. Maybe teachers should identify with a cart to move from room to room.” Massie noted that Rappahannock does have teachers moving from room to room because of the size of classes they have. Faulkner said this problem represents a “constant struggle. In the ’20’s and '30’s the teachers had a classroom which doubled as their office. When space became as expensive as it did, we began to build smaller spaces for teachers’ offices.”
Board member Nancy Reeve asked if a teachers’ workroom could serve for this office space. Faulkner agreed it could if the teachers’ workroom would not be needed for private counselling and if each teacher had a lockable space.
Reeve asked Faulkner what is being done now in alternate energy in building and remodeling schools.
Faulkner said board members should “rest easy with the fact that they are doing nothing now. The only thing that is provable is energy conservation.”
By 1986 or 1987 he predicted that advances in battery storage and photovaltaic cells to produce electricity from sunlight will enable schools and other customers to compete with the power company in satisfying energy needs.
