“The Rappahannock County Public School system is dedicated to providing a drug-free environment for student learning,” said Superintendent David Gangel. “Due to a perceived increase in local drug trafficking, the U. S. Customs Service was approached in regard to their drug-sniffing dogs. ”
The Customs Service trains dogs specifically for use in drug detection at a facility in Harmony Hollow outside Front Royal. The dogs are trained to sniff out drugs hidden in a variety of places, including concealment of large quantities shipped into the United States from elsewhere. After training, they are stationed at customs inspection points throughout the United States.
The agency agreed, as it has done on previous occasions, to demonstrate to the high school student body, during an assembly at RCHS, how the dogs can find hidden illegal drugs.
