The Medical College of Virginia and the Associated General Contractors of Virginia are offering the only state-approved course in Virginia for companies supervising asbestos removal in commercial and public buildings.
Currently, Virginia contractors who want to work on these projects are facing a July 1,1988, deadline for taking the course required for licensure in asbestos abatement. Until now, there has been no Virginia course on the subject. The MCV/AGC course also has the approval of the Environmental Protection Agency.
“Contractors now have a locally'developed course which gives a comprehensive view of asbestop abatement operations and safety^” said Ernie Drew, director of education for the Virginia Construction Industry Education Foundation.
The five-day curriculum covers subjects like removal procedures, asbestos’s health effects, protective equipment, insurance, regulatory and contract issues. Any company which is currently working with asbestos or intends to conduct asbestos abatement operations should attend, Mr. Drew added.
Courses are currently scheduled for the MCV campus in Richmond, but other sites may be selected later, according to Mr. Drew. Course dates are Dec. 14-18; Jan. 1115; Feb. 8-12; March 14-18; April 1115; May 9-13; and June 6-10. Interested companies may contact Mh Drew at (804) 359-9288.
