To more of Dr. Krebser’s questions, Mr. Williams reported that the three adjoining lots are on a private, unpaved road with a 50-foot right-of-way.
“Are there any other lots here?” Dr. Krebser inquired.
“Two hundred in that one block!” interjected Planning Commissioner Newbill Miller, explaining that the creation of the Blue Ridge Subdivision was the catalyst that led the county to adopt its first subdivision ordinance in 1963.
‘There are 440 lots in the subdivision,” added Arthur Town, a resident of the development.
“These lots were made when I was that high,” said Mr. Williams, holding his hand at knee level, “for city people to come out on weekends and put up a tent... As long as you can get your well permit and your septic permit from the Health Department, you can build,” he added, noting that as a general rule, two lots must be joined for a house site.
“What worries me is that we’re going to have an awful lot of contamination up there eventually (with drainfields on such small land parcels),” said Dr. Krebser. “Then the county is going to have to come in and put in water or sewer.”
“Or both,” interjected Mr. Miller.
