followed efforts by environmental groups and organizations such as the Ragged Mountain Resource Center and the Piedmont Environmental Council to educate the public about the state of our streams and rivers. Since agricultural is the big business here the importance of how farms affect the streams and about what farmers are doing, statewide, to aid in keeping the rivers clean is of vital importance now and in for the future.

The county is not the only place with water issues. This past year has seen the Town of Washington address its water issues. The paper has covered stories on the many water and waste water options available that the town is looking into and the Town Waste .water Study Committee has been formed to study the problem and make recommendations to the Town Council. A town sanitation survey of each residence in town is presently underway.

Town future

The town council has also worked toward planning for the future of the town and how and whether it will expand. The Town Future Committee evolved into the Town Steering Committee, composed of citizens who volunteered and directed by professional planner Milton Herd. The steering committee has made some progress in 1997 but was only formed in October and has much more to do, including writing ..a revised comprehensive plan for the town. ^ ^
