In Homo sapiens, the rise or fall of one to two degrees in body temperature can cause serious problems. A bird has a much greater range. Studies have shown that a Song Sparrow’s temperature may fluctuate by 10 degrees over the period of one day. The rise , or fall haturally depends on the bird’s activities; it is much lower when the bird is at rest, for example, and when the bird is roosting at night. It is higher when the bird is active, flying and actively seeking food.
It is imperative then, that in extremely cold weather, all who feed wild birds make a special effort to keep the stomachs of avian visitors full.
