1997 the supervisors have met a good deal of resistance to the county’s Six Year Plan for secondary roads. The issue came about as a result of disagreement between the supervisors and a group of residents of Route 621 in Woodville which the residents do not want paved but which is on the Six Year Plan. The road work for Route 621 was approved earlier this year however the citizens felt they weren’t properly informed. That controversy generated a great deal of interest in the Six Year Plan and what is in store for the roads in the county. It is an ongoing process and there are most definitely those for and against paving of roads. The Rappahannock News will continue to cover this issue in 1998.
Road access
Along with the road issue is tied in another of the dilemmas facing the county — the problem of access to many county roads by fire and rescue vehicles and other county vehicles such as school buses. Many of the problem areas lie with private roads and the supervisors will be looking at what to do about enacting a road standard for mountain roads.
The planning commission is now looking at that very issue and has asked for the help of the fire and rescue companies and the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection in developing those standards.
All of these will be stories that will develop further this year and ones which the Rappahannock News will continue to follow.
