In its last meeting of the year, the Commonwealth Transportation Board voted unanimously to postpone its decision on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s proposal to construct a left turn lane for westbound traffic on U.S. 211/522 at Sperryville. The project is part of the state’s Six Year Construction Plan for Secondary Roads.
Despite considerable local opposition, the project was strongly endorsed by the county board of supervisors in October. VDOT District Engineer Bob Moore submitted the supervisors’ supporting resolution and the results of the September public hearing to the VDOT District Administrator for review. Moore also supported the project, citing safety and increased efficiency in traffic movement. In the face of mounting protest and citizen complaints, VDOT management turned to the CTB to resolve the issue.
