During long, cold winter nights birds, because of their very high metabolic rate, bum energy rapidly. They need food think of it as fuel the instant they are active at dawn. It is known that a chickadee must find food within 15 minutes of becoming active in the morning; if not, the bird will starve. Each year, I have to remind myself of this and check the feeders for a goodly supply of seed and other high protein food at night so it is there when birds need it most. When the ground is covered with snow or ice, birds need all the help they can get for natural food is covered.
