As to the water, a large pumper can carry 1,000 gallons and depending on the nature of the fire and how many hoses are working, they can douse a place for about 10 minutes.
Now a tanker carries between 1,000 and 2,000 gallons depending on its size, and here’s how the tanker comes into play. It can lay out on the ground a large unfolding holding tank and can fill that with the water it carries. The tanker is then freed up to go for another load of water. Where does it go? It goes to a nearby pond, river, or possibly a full-running stream. A pumper is stationed there to fill the tankers, sucking water from the pond or river and transferring it to the tanker. The tanker then brings the water back to the site of the fire to refill the holding tank on the ground.
