As we prepare for the
1998 session of the Virginia General Assembly, I am reminded of the story of an older gentleman who set out with his grandson to plant a tree alongside the road. As they prepare the soil, the youngster looks up and says, “Grandpa, why are you planting this tree, when you won’t see it grow to be big and strong?”
“Because, son,” he replies, “There are a lot of trees that are big and strong now which I am able to enjoy that were planted by others before me who were not able to see the fruit of their labors, either.”
