I have observed that in some
case F. T. Valley is designated Ft. Valley. I am not a native of Rappahannock County, but as a very longtime resident and co-author of Rappahannock County History, I would like to register a protest against that name being used for Route 231 south of Sperryville.
Circa 1740, almost' 100 years before our county, the second Rappahannock, was formed, Francis Thornton owned a large tract of land in this area. To mark the trail he carved his initials —F.T. — on a tree, and from that time on the valley was known as F.T. Valley, and the road as the F.T. Valley Road. At one time there was F.T. village and the F.T. church is still very active.
