E.G. Hackley said his father, Lewis Erwin or “L.E.” as people called him, began operating a store in 1905 on the adjacent corner where the present post office is located. When his father had a heart attack in 1925, he sold the store, he said. It burned in 1926 and with no other way of earning a living, his father built the present store in 1934, Hackley said. He ran the store with his wife, Rosalie, and in 1937 when his father died Hackley said he joined his mother at the store. They ran it together until 1955 wljen she died.
