Jennifer and Susannah McNear, who are both students at Mercersburg Academy in Mercersburg, Pa. were both awarded letters for their contributions to the school’s field hockey team this fall. The McNear sisters are the daughters of Mr. and Mrs. Richard McNear of Route 1, Washington. Ken Gilpin gave a lesson on the Civil War to a class at RCHS. Gilpin, representing a soldier from Gen. Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia, told the class about the life of the average soldier during the war, then gave a military history lesson on the Battle of Chancellors ville. The county’s Brownie Troop 909 in October became one of the first county organizations to adopt a highway under the Virginia Department of Transportation’s new program.
