Red has evolved as the color to celebrate the victory over darkness and slow lengthening the day after the winter solstice of Dec. 21: the shortest day of the year. Red is present at the bird feeder in the brilliant crimson patch on the back of the head of the male Downy Woodpecker. Another woodpecker, the Red-bellied, sports even more red; this of a different hue.
The biggest “red” of them all is the male Cardinal. I wish for at least one snowfall so that the most beautiful winter gift of them all can be enjoyed: a male Cardinal on a snow-covered branch. I wish that all readers have repeated visits from all birds enhanced by red.
