One of the most poignant touches are the paper chains and red white and blue pinwheels made by the 250 children in grades K-5 at the Hamilton Elementary School in Hamilton, Va. These creations express hope and patriotism and honor those who lost their lives on Sept. 11.

While Mss. Crocker, McCarthy and van Dort designed, commissioned, and installed the project, they were helped by a large and enthusiastic cadre of local volunteers including Mike Garrett, Ronnie Jenkins, Jonathan and Timothy Neill-Dore, Joe Wenk, Helen and Ryan Ralston, Kathryn TYeanor, Lisa Pendleton, Tim O’Meara, Red and Janet Hofer, Fran Eldred, Cheri Woodard, Charlotte Scott, Judy Perine, Rose Ann Sharp, Mary Jane Cappello, Kay Miller, and Amy Burnett.

Ms. McCarthy said, “This is another example of what is so wonderful about Rappahannock County. Tb get this sort of participation and support from everyone is incredible.”

The United States Botanic Garden, an oasis on the National Mall in the shadow of the Capitol Building offers visitors of every age a restful and educational sensory experience.

The U.S. Botanic Garden is one of the oldest botanic gardens in North America, established by Congress in 1820. The conservatory building was constructed in 1933 and was in constant use until 1997 when it was closed for renovation. The plant collection has been expanded to include about 4,000 plants including rare and historical specimens from around the world. The U.S. Botanic Garden includes an Orchid House, Garden Primeval, Jungle/Palm House, plant exploration garden, medicinal plant garden and gardens depicting a desert and a desert oasis.
