Before the birth of Christ the people of Europe hung evergreens above their doors during the winter. They believed the woodland spirits wondered about in the cold, and they hoped that by offering them shelter within their homes they would receive good health and fortune.
The ancient Romans used evergreens during their festival of Saturnalia which was held in late December. The early Christians adopted the use of greens for their Christmas celebrations. It is symbolic of everlasting life given at Christmas.
The wreath is in the form of a circle which has no beginning and no ending. This pictures eternity in our minds. Our life with God is everlasting.
Candles and Christmas lights show our thanks for the star that shown so bright long ago, and to express joy in the celebration and signify the coming of the Light.
Placing candles in a window to light the Christ child on His way is a custom brought to this country from Germany. The Irish claim to have originated it. Light has been used by many religious groups to symbolize truth, while darkness has been the universal symbol for evil.
Jesus has been referred to as “the light of the world” in the New Testament. The lighting of candles has become an important part of our Christmas worship. Some early Christian leaders stated that the wax of the altar candles represented the body of Christ, while the wick symbolized his soul, and the flame portrayed his divine nature.
Candles made from pure bees wax also served as an emblem of Mary, since the wax comes from virgin bees.
This has resulted as a practice for some churches to bum only bees wax candles upon the altar.
