This will be my sixth year
as a member of the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club, the oldest 4-H club in the county. f While all of the 4-H clubs stimulate positive development in youth, the Livestock Club is especially efficient at doing so. Whether children are raising a 12 hundred pound steer or a 30 pound goat, they learn the same essential lessons that are used throughout life.
Yearly animal projects teach time management, financial responsibility and moral values. For a period of three to seven months, the 4H is responsible for everyday care and health of the project. As it draws closer to the Farm Fair, the child learns to train his or her animal so that it can be safely handled in the show ring.
When the time comes for an exhibitor to display his or her hard work at the fair, he also learns to respect his fellow exhibitors and their property. There are very few institutions today that can still teachthese important lessens, and the 4-H is one of theni.
