Outnumbered 81-23 in the National Steeplechase Association’s spring Condition book, timber races more than keep stride when it comes to action, competition and tradition. And did we mention riches? What started as a day in the country for eight amateur horsemen and their families in 1922 has evolved into one of the spring’s most lucrative timber classics in the nation. The $50,000 Virginia Gold Cup, to be run May 6 at the purpose-built Great Meadow in The Plains, celebrates its 81st anniversary running this year. More than 50,000 people may be #on hand Saturday when America’s finest steeplechasers face the flag. Plan ahead for the big day: Tickets are sold in advance only. No tickets are sold at the gates. More than 100 horses are expected to overfill eight races on the program, including pre-card pony races. Purses, including the rich Gold Cup feature, exceed $ 150,000.
