Gold Cup winner. It was a cold, rainy day and only four horses took on the slippery course. Leeds Don had trouble with his first jumps, even going to his knees at the seventh, but veteran Joe Aitcheson kept him on his feet and pressed him to victory.
Aitcheson not only won that key race, but also won five out of the six races on die card that day. The Hallof Famer would eventually win eight Virginia Gold Cups on eight different horses, a record that will be difficult to match.
Grand spoiling times
Besides being a great Virginia sporting spectacle, the Gold Cup has long been a major social evert. Traditionally, members of the Warrenton Hunt entertained outof-town friends at private luncheons before the race and then moved the parlies to the Broadview course for the afternoon.
Broadview had a hillside providing a natural grandstand for viewing the course below. A large old oak tree on top was the place to meet and an informal tradition erf settling into “your spot” by the tree became established.
Seemingly, every Rolls Royce and Bendey in Virginia, complete with elegant tailgate picnics, appeared on the hillside. Occasionally, the pricey vehicles would have to be pulled out of the mud by tractors when rain dared fall on Gold Cup Saturday.
