recalled the day around 1980. “I ‘spotted’ races for him, helped him out with silks and position in the race.”
From there, Will O’Keefe was hooked, working more and more meets, gaining confidence and skills to follow brown dots of horses for as far as a mile away through bobbing binoculars. “I’ve got a system,” O’Keefe says, 27 years later.
Though he knows most of the players, O’Keefe still heads to the saddling enclosure before each race, taking a few minutes to study the jockeys’ silks and murmur each horse’s name aloud.
