kept him idle until April 8 at the Old Dominion Point-to-Point, but any doubts about Miles Ahead’s return to form were erased by watching his easy jumping style, fluid gallop and turn of foot in the homestretch. Miles Ahead stayed put March 25 while stablemate No Fast Moves made easy work of the Carolina Cup allowance timber, but trainer Neil Morris looked to steer Miles Ahead on a similar prep path for the targeted May 6 Gold Cup. For the April 22 Middleburg Hunt Cup (which was contested after the deadline for this special section), Morris placed Miles Ahead and stablemate Chinese Whisper, second in last spring’s Gold Cup, in the three-mile timber feature.
“I have three nice horses,” Morris said, adding 2003 Cup winner Lord Kenneth to the mix, “and I try to keep them separated.” But with dwindling choices to give each of his power trjo - Miles Ahead, Chinese Whisper and Lord Kenneth - a prep for the Great Meadow meet, Morris had no choice but to enter two in the Middleburg race.
